CEWD works with strategic partners to coordinate employment and employee needs with demand-driven training, making use of institutional and industry resources to develop training programs that lead to employment growth positions. Meeting the needs of high-growth, high demand industry requires outreach to the youth population, the underemployed and unemployed, and providing them with the skills and training needed to succeed in workforce, as well as informing them about job opportunities and higher education.

Workforce Development
"Workforce Development is a system for preparing individuals to find and keep jobs and for helping businesses attract and retain qualified workers. It includes skills training, education, career development, job placement, and job retention" (New York City Employment and Training Coalition) The Center brings together industry stakeholders-unions, employers, institutions of higher education, economic and workforce development agencies, and national organizations. It leverages these organizations' knowledge and resources to examine workforce issues and encourage continued growth and success for this major sector of the New York City economy. Since its inauguration the Center has expanded its programs to promote workforce in various industries.

The Center for Economic and Workforce Development also nurtures the development of new programs and training opportunities to promote higher-wage and higher skill jobs, offers consulting services to local employers to help identify economic needs and trends, and develops customized workforce training/certification to satisfy those needs.

Currently CEWD and the Office of Continuing Education (OCE) have two workforce training programs Project Welcome and Jobs to Build on Together CEWD and OCE also offer a series of certificate programs that would result in an increase of wages. For a full list please see CEWD's catalog.

Economic Development
Workforce Development leads to Economic Development. By training and equipping individuals with the skills necessary to enter the workforce, new workers are hired. As they work their way up the career ladder, wages and salaries increase which leads to an increase in spending, investment and tax generated. (New York Employment and Training Coalition) Economic development takes into consideration the long term future. We define what the long term is by research. Through research the Center can develop career pathways and guide curriculum formation by looking forward to where the careers are going to be. Through research the Center can seek to create innovative programs and stay ahead of the curve.
