Kingsborough Community College is the only CUNY institution that offers an Associate's Degree in Maritime Technology. Maritime Technology is a U.S. Coast Guard approved program offered at Kingsborough Community College. The Maritime Technology program is unique because half of the training happens in the classroom and half is hands-on. Before graduation, students earn 250 days of sea-time applicable towards Captains licenses or United States Merchant Marine Officers licenses. Program graduates are employed as marina managers, vessel repair technicians and sales positions
The program specializes in training for "brown water" jobs close to shore (versus "blue water" ocean-going careers) that boasts state-of-the-art facilities and a highly qualified faculty, most of whom are captains and/or owners of maritime-industry businesses. Graduates of the Maritime Technology program easily find employment at many of NYC's marinas as supervisors and managers, or as captains and mates on ferries and dinner boats in New York harbor, often being hired by program graduates who are now managing and in some cases the owners of local marinas and tour boats or dinner boats.
