The No Limits VESL is a partnership between Kingsborough with City College, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Coney Island Hospital and the New York City Department of Small Business Services. The proposed partnership brings together a wealth of resources and experience in administering contextualized ESL, vocational training and workforce education programs. Training will prepare participants for the Food Management and Clerical Services career ladders, areas identified by participating employers, where bilingual personnel are in demand and that provide realistic and attainable opportunities for professional advancement and wage.
This is a free program that serves to develop and deliver a holistic model of VESL instruction to 125 low-level limited English proficiency (LEP) workers from the non-medical support services healthcare sector. By focusing on the non-medical healthcare support services sector and career ladders in Food Management and Clerical Services this project provides accessible, attainable opportunities for greater employability and wage gains; address the language and communication skills that prevent LEP workers from achieving skills set and industry-approved credentials adaptable to other institutions and industries including restaurants, hotels, schools and offices. Students will learn the appropriate language customer service, and workplace safety skills needed for effective interaction with patients, co-workers, and supervisors including the structure of conversation; how to ask for information; and how to clarify misunderstood information.
Food Handlers courses will run in 17 week cohorts from 4:30pm to 8pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Clerical courses will run on in 17 week cohorts from 4:30pm-7:30pm on Wednesdays.
